What does Radical Wellness involve?

Radical Wellness Program has been founded by Dr Arun Dhir, a prominent Gastro Intestinal surgeon from Melbourne. Dr Arun is a yoga and a meditation teacher himself and sees a higher purpose in his work as being a bridge between Eastern and Western modalities of healing. He is a health reformist and is a passionate educator. He writes and speaks regularly on these concepts that are reflected in his work “Happy Gut Healthy Weight” (Balboa Press 2018) and “Creating a New You – Health Journal ” (Metagenics 2019).

A typical class has four components:

  • Tapping into Body Power: Yoga and breath control
  • Tapping into Mind Power: Guided meditation for health
  • Information to Transformation Session: Planting the seeds
  • Group Intention Healing: Focused group activity

These classes are now ONLINE group sessions of 90 minutes duration on Sunday mornings 7.30 – 9.00am AEST.

The harmony between mind, body & spirit.

Advances in neuroscience and neuropsychology have shown that mind and body are in constant communication, with a flow of nerve signal and hormones from the brain to the cells of the body and then back again. We know the mind tells the body how to feel, but the body can tell the mind how to think.

Mental stress and unresolved trauma can affect the well-being of our physical body just as long-standing physical pain can manifest in mental pain or illness. Limiting mental patterns accumulated through trauma over time, creating an unconscious negative mental talk that has the ability to manifest as disease.

When we live in high-stress states for extended periods, we will end up impacting the heart (leading to arrhythmias or high blood pressure), digestion (causing indigestion, reflux irritable bowel and inflammation) and the immune function (causing colds, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis and even cancers).

Becoming conscious or aware of how our stress related emotions are pushing us into states of disease and throwing our immune system out of balance, allows us to look at how bringing a balance in the 5 pillars of healing can result in optimal health.

Radical Wellness is a holistic approach to wellness where we re-integrate the body and mind, re-programming their negative relationship and transforming it into a positive one, allowing you to experience the optimum health that you desire.

The basis of all disease is an imbalanced immune system

The immune system is key to human health and is defined as “the bodily system that protects the body from foreign substances, cells, and tissues…” When out of balance, the immune system not only fails to protect the body but can even attack it, mistaking “self” cells for invading pathogens, resulting in debilitating diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Even cancers are an immune mediated disease in many situations.

Radical Wellness Program focuses on balancing the immune system by recalibrating the body’s stress response and using tools like Yoga, Meditation and Group Intention, which have been proven to have an effect on Genes and Immune function.


  • Regulation of gene expression by yoga, meditation and related practices: A review of recent studies
  • Meditation can produce beneficial effects to prevent cardiovascular disease

Why Radical?

You must have heard the word “Radical” in relation to cancer treatment – Radical mastectomy ( breast removal) or Gastrectomy (stomach removal). Radical is a word that reflects the drastic nature of the disease and perhaps the treatment as well, in its potential to cause destruction and hopefully cure.

Another meaning for the word “Radical” in the Oxford dictionary is “Fundamental and Comprehensive.”

Upon reading this, it dawned upon me that if disease can be “Radical”, why can’t health and wellness be “radical” too?

What is Radical Wellness about?

Radical wellness is not a magic pill. Rather, it’s a way of life! Modern-day stress, with the highly digitalised lives and easy access to “processed” foods (I call them foods with no life), set the stage for a health crisis.

At our Radical Wellness classes, we teach the fundamentals that underpin this way of life. The basis of all health and wellness starts by tapping into the inner pharmacy that our amazing body has a storehouse of. We use three tools to achieve this:

Most of us see the gut as an organ of digestion and elimination. This is only partly true. The relevance of the human gut and its role in determining your overall health and well-being has been recognised for centuries.

The father modern medicine, Hippocrates coated that all disease begins in the gut. Modern scientific research is confirming that gut has several known digestive functions which are crucial to our health and well-being.

Some of these are:

  1. The gut is the seat of your ​Immune system
  2. The gut is a seat of your ​Metabolism
  3. The gut is the largest ​Endocrine organ​ in the body producing ​serotonin, dopamine and other hormones that maintain our health and well-being

Dr Arun Dhir is a Gastrointestinal surgeon and has practised his craft for over three decades. He is a Monash University lecturer, researcher and author of two books. He is also a Yoga and meditation teacher registered with Yoga Australia. His clinical practice embodies an integrative approach towards individuals experiencing the scourge of obesity.
